“I’m a native Kentuckian, but moved here from Philadelphia about two years ago. To say I had no experience with high altitude hiking would be an understatement!
Settling into the Roaring Fork Valley in January of 2017, I knew I needed to experience everything that this beautiful state and valley had to offer, so I chose Grizzly Creek Trail as my first Colorado hike. It was a mild winter that year, but I immediately fell in love with the snow-covered trail and with the sounds of the rushing creek that kept me company as I ambled along.
・・・・・
The trail is about 7.9 miles out and back and includes roughly 2,000 feet of elevation gain. With spectacular views of towering cliffs, the trail runs parallel to Grizzly Creek, a tributary of the Colorado River. In winter, the rock walls are blanketed white by snow, and in the summer, I enjoy the vivid colors of endless wildflowers. The trail climbs moderately at the beginning and then rises more steeply in the last 1 ½ miles. Those hilly sections are challenging for my West Highland Terrier (short legs!), so I typically don’t finish the hike when she is with me. However, the trail is wonderful for active dogs, with plenty of opportunities to splash in the creek (and splash me!) in the warmer months.
・・・・・
As my first Colorado hike, this trail has immeasurable sentimental value – I find myself visiting it time and time again. While my first and most memorable experience was in the colder months, I’ve also grown fond of summer’s butterflies and columbine. On a sunny July day, nothing beats a summer picnic along Grizzly Creek!”
