AUGUST UPDATES

Little Explorers, Big Success

Our first Little Explorer program of 2023 was a huge success at the Coffman Ranch community project. On Saturday, August 26th, a group of NINE young explorers embarked on an exciting journey of discovery, uncovering the beauty of endangered orchids, observing the diverse wildlife in the wetlands, and unraveling the intricacies of the Coffman Ranch habitat.

As the little explorers engaged in a nature scavenger hunt, their parents dedicated their morning to enhancing trails. The event proved to be a resounding success, seamlessly blending education and environmental engagement for the children, while also affording our dedicated community volunteers a productive opportunity to accomplish meaningful work.

Progress on the Four Pass Loop

On August 10-13, the RFOV crew took a team of 7 dedicated volunteers up the backside of the Four Pass Loop. Because the backside of this trail is difficult to get to, the work needed to get done was of high need. This project left a tangible mark of accomplishment:

1,823 feet of trail worked on

101 feet of trail tread maintained

1,351 feet of trail corridor cleared

20 new steps installed

220 cubic feet of Rockwall installation

It is with immense gratitude that we acknowledge the unwavering dedication of our volunteers, for being stewards of our public lands! It is the power of community and conservation that gets projects like this one done.

American Red Cross - Mass Care Shelter Training

On Wednesday, August 30, the Third Street Center hosted over 45 people for theAmerican Red Cross Mass Care Shelter Training.

RFOV proudly collaborated with the Aspen Institute's Hurst Community Initiative and the Western Mountain Regional Community Organizations Active in Disaster (COAD) to facilitate this comprehensive training program. The initiative aimed to empower local residents who are passionate about providing care and support within their communities during times of crisis.

UPCOMING PROJECTS

Coal Basin Ranch - Saturday, September 16

We're going back to Coal Basin Ranch this year! We will be restoring more natural areas at the site that were once the base for a large-scale coal mining operation. Come learn about this beautiful area while healing degraded soils and plant communities.

Filoha Meadows - Sunday, September 17

Filoha Meadows is home to the stream orchid, but these rare plants are being threatened by invasive Canada thistle. You can take this opportunity to see an area otherwise closed to the public, help us control an invasive species, and protect a beautiful rare orchid.

Riverside Openspace - Saturday, September 30

Come help provide sustainable access to beautiful gold medal waters in the heart of Glenwood Springs. With miles of riparian habitat on City Open Spaces, it's time to discover a new to you, favorite spot in town to connect with the Roaring Fork.

Fire Mitigation Training - Sunday, October 8

Does your property need wildfire mitigation work, but you're not sure where to start? Join us as Mike Uncapher and other local wildfire mitigation experts teach how to plan and execute mitigation projects.
