June Projects and Trainings

SAT, JUNE 10 AT CMC - BRING THE KIDS!

Pictured above, the CMC Spring Valley campus integrates recreation, restoration and education. Come help us care for their publicly accessible natural areas by spending a day removing invasive thistles. Invasive plants outcompete native plants for light, water, and resources, eventually reducing biodiversity and resilience in local ecosystems.

After a warm day in the sun, we'll end the day with cold, refreshing lemonade made from the thistles we remove.  Then, all volunteers will receive a coupon from Pollinator Chocolate in Carbondale for a free beer or chocolate soda.

Our “Little Explorers” childcare program is available from 9 am-12:30 pm at no cost for participating volunteers with children ages 4-8.  Activities include a scavenger hunt, art activities, and structured nature play. If minimum registration is not met by June 7, registrants will be notified via email of Little Explorers cancelation.

MARBLE STEWARDSHIP EXTRAVAGANZA

Volunteers of all ages and abilities are invited to participate in one or both days of a weekend campout June 24 and 25 in Marble full of stewardship projects, learning opportunities, and plenty of time to just hang out. We'll work on trail and restoration projects at the in-town Marble Mill Site, the Raspberry Creek Trail, and the Marble Wetlands.

Special activities include a waterfall hike and history tour of the Marble Mill Site from which white marble was sourced to build the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. and Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery.

Located amid striking alpine topography along the Elk Mountains, the Town of Marble has reserved the entire campground for two nights for this RFOV community project. RFOV staff and volunteers will cook dinner on Friday and breakfast on Saturday and Sunday, while the highly popular restaurant Slow Groovin will be donating dinner on Saturday and Sunday.

At the beginning of each day, participants will meet at the Marble Mill Site Park (213 W Park St, Marble, CO 81623) near the fire station to choose where they want to volunteer. Registration links are available on the RFOV website, one for each of the two (2) days of volunteering and each of the two (2) camping nights. Unfortunately, we all need to leave our pets at home during this project.

INTRO TO TRAIL MAINTENANCE AND BUILDING

Do you want to learn more about the skills that make local trail projects a success?

Join us the evening of Tuesday, June 20 at the Red Hill Trailhead in Carbondale for an evening of learning about and discussing some of the basic trail work concepts and skills, including trail planning, tread maintenance, erosion control, and corridor maintenance.
