30TH ANNIVERSARY MONTHLY
HISTORY NUGGET

One of RFOV's biggest and most successful milestones was starting the Young Stewards Program in 2012 to further engage local youth in our mission. Over the years, our youth education programming has matured into a suite of offerings used by schools, libraries, youth organizations, and other partners throughout the RFOV service area.

By addressing the need for outdoor education programs during and after school hours, as well as in communities with fewer opportunities for outdoor education, RFOV educates over 1,500 local youth every year in both the classroom and outdoors.

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT

Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers offers a variety of programs dedicated to stewarding our public lands. This month, we want to focus on our healthy landscapes program. RFOV believes that healthy landscapes make for healthy people. We invite individuals and groups of all backgrounds to engage in the restoration of our shared outdoors. Opportunities vary each year, but can include reseeding, replanting (shrubs, trees), vegetation management, and wetland stabilization.

GROUPS + BUSINESSES

CALLING ALL BUSINESSES IN THE GLENWOOD, NEW CASTLE, SILT, OR RIFLE AREA! We are looking for a group to adopt the Silt River Preserve this season and hopefully for many years to come.

This is beautiful nature preserve needs consistent invasive species removal and help planting and reseeding to maintain and restore the 132 acres of significant riparian habitat and prime agricultural land.

Please reach out to cwoodward@rfov.org if you are interested or know of a group or organization that might be interested in the opportunity. Adopters can commit financially or through 60 hours of work to the site each year. In return, they get a sign at the parking area with their name on it and a unique stewardship and team building experience.

YOUNG STEWARDS

Youth In Nature

Last month, YIN students spent the day with the Buddy Program at CMC Spring Valley Campus. The group learned about backcountry cooking methods on small camping stoves like making pita pizzas and pineapple upside down cake. After journaling in the sunshine, they finished the day climbing at CMC’s indoor climbing gym.

Do you know a student that would benefit from this year-long, paid program? The Youth In Nature application for 2025/2026 is NOW OPEN until April 4th. Students join this program to meet new people, get out of their comfort zone, unplug, and have fun!

The application and more information can be found on our website at https://www.rfov.org/yin.

Adventure Stewards

Adventure Stewards is back and this season and we will be offering TWO sessions!

This program introduces students 11-14 to local, world-class outdoor adventure activities while also giving back to these special places through hands-on stewardship projects. Students will walk away with the skills they need to become a life-long outdoor adventurer and steward.

Be on the lookout for open registration no later than March 1st!
