Independence Pass is true alpine splendor! So come visit for a day of trailwork and a chance to learn about the true residents of higher altitudes - the pika! For four years we've been working to reduce the impacts of water runoff and human traffic on this short, but popular, trail.

Project Context: Pika
Why the focus on one particular animal – the pika – during today's project? Researchers have conclusively linked local extinctions of American pika populations at sites across the Western US to the effects of continually warming temperatures. Even though Colorado’s pikas are currently stable, the species as a whole remains highly vulnerable.
More data is needed in order to help guide wildlife management policies in Colorado and elsewhere, and fieldwork plays a vital role in evaluating the predications made by climate models. Unfortunately, researchers and managers don’t have the funds or capacity to carry out such extensive and time-consuming work. This is where community science comes in!
