Volunteering on RFOV projects is a great way to meet people in the area who love the outdoors, and to get involved with a great organization that really cares about our public lands.
RFOV generally organizes 9 to 12 projects each year between Aspen and Rifle, plus Adopt-a-Trail group projects up and down the valley. Most projects are on Saturday from 8:30 to 4:00, with an occasional two-day (Saturday & Sunday) project that requires camping out. We always provide a great meal at the end of the day, including plenty of cold beer and other beverages. If working on a trail crew isn't for you, volunteer for the kitchen crew!
General Project Information We send out a fact sheet about 10 to 14 days before each project day that gives directions to the site and describes the details of the project, what to bring, what to wear, etc. Registration starts at 8:00 a.m. (we provide coffee, pastries, and fruit) and we break up into crews under well-trained crew leaders to start work by 8:30. We have a great time and hopefully learn a lot while we create new trails and/or enhance the sustainability of our existing public trails. We end the day around 4 p.m. with a post-project party and a chance to get to know the other volunteers.
In 15 years RFOV has only canceled one (yes, one!) project due to bad weather.
