Mitchell Creek Trail Project Fact Sheet

Date:  Saturday, May 18, 2018 — CO Public Lands Day

Time:  8:30 am to 2:00 pm (snacks and beverages to follow)

Location:  Glenwood Springs, CO (near the Fish Hatchery)

Project Schedule

8:30 am – Registration
9:00 am – Start Work
Noon – Lunch
2:00 pm – End Work + Celebrate!

RFOV and the US Forest Service are excited to celebrate Colorado Public Lands Day! Mitchell Creek is a steep trail that provides direct access to the Flat Tops Wilderness. Volunteer work will primarily include general trail maintenance and removal of overgrown brush.

Registration

Please park in the Fish Hatchery and check in at the RFOV tent upon arrival. From there, volunteers and tools will be shuttled 1/3 mile up Mitchell Creek Rd to the trail head. We will split into crews and head up the trail for the morning.

Meals

RFOV will provide light breakfast snacks in the morning. Please bring your own lunch and full water bottles to start. We will end the day around 2:00pm and celebrate with snacks and beverages. Lunch and dinner are not provided.

What to Wear and Bring

  • Layer your clothing to be ready for a cool morning and probable hot weather during the day:
  • Rain gear
  • Sturdy, closed toe shoes and long pants are required
  • Hat, sunscreen, sunglasses
  • Water (at least 1/2 gallon)
  • Personal snacks
  • Lunch
  • Work gloves
  • Insect repellent

Important Notes

  • As much as we love pets, they typically make unsafe project participants. To ensure the safety of all pets and volunteers, pets are not permitted on RFOV projects.

  • This project is appropriate for volunteers 7 years old and older. The work is suitable for younger children but the hike may not be suitable for children under 7. We request one-on-one adult supervision of any minors attending this project.

Directions

If using Google Maps – search “Glenwood Springs Fish Hatchery” on Mitchell Creek Rd (Co Rd 132)

From west of Glenwood Springs (New Castle, Silt, Rifle)

Head east-bound on I-70. Take Exit 114 to West Glenwood Springs. Take the 4th exit at the roundabout to go under the bridge. At the second roundabout, continue straight through to Mel Ray Rd (2nd exit). Continue 0.3 miles and turn left at the stop sign onto Donegan Rd. In 0.6 miles turn right at the T intersection onto Mitchell Creek Rd. Parking is about 1 mile up Mitchell Creek Rd (Co Rd 132) at the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Glenwood Springs Fish Hatchery.

From HWY 82 and Glenwood Springs (Roaring Fork Valley)

Travel through downtown Glenwood Springs and cross the bridge over I-70 (stay in the right lane). Take a slight right towards W 6th Street and an immediate left to continue towards W 6th St and the roundabout. Continue straight through the roundabout to W 6th St (3rd exit). Travel 1.8 miles on 6th Stand take the first exit at the roundabout onto Mel Ray Rd (between the Shell and Exxon). Continue 0.3 miles and turn left at the stop sign onto Donegan Rd. In 0.6 miles turn right at the T intersection onto Mitchell Creek Rd. Parking is about 1 mile up Mitchell Creek Rd (Co Rd 132) at the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Glenwood Springs Fish Hatchery.
