What to Expect

RFOV is excited to partner with Aspen Valley Land Trust (AVLT) to improve the recently acquired Marble Basecamp property. This site will be used as a camping and outdoor education space for local school groups. Volunteers can expect to build short access trails, level camping surfaces, and reduce wildfire risk by removing down trees. Access to the property is via a rough, 4-wheel drive road either in your own vehicle or a provided shuttle. All meals provided for the weekend from Friday dinner to Sunday lunch.

What to Bring

  • Personal camping gear (tent, sleeping bag, headlamp, etc.)
  • Camping plate, bowl, cup, + utensils
  • Camp chair
  • Work gloves
  • Work/trail shoes
  • Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, etc.
  • Rain gear (jacket, pants)
  • Warm hat + gloves for evenings
  • Insect repellent
  • Water (at least 1/2 gallon)
  • Personal snacks
  • Small backpack for snacks + gear

What to Wear

Please layer your clothing to be ready for cool weather at night and warm weather later in the day. Be prepared with a hat, sunscreen, work gloves, and rain gear. Long pants are recommended and sturdy, closed-toed shoes are required.

Meals

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be provided from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon (vegetarian options available). Please bring your own plate, bowl, cup, utensils, and full water bottles.

Registration + Transportation

All volunteers must pre-register and fill out the online waiver. Access to the property is via a rough, 4-wheel drive road (Lost Trail Rd). Volunteers with high clearance vehicles may drive to the site at any time or assist with shuttling at the following times. RFOV + AVLT staff will also be shuttling volunteers to the site. Shuttles will be provided from the park in downtown Marble at the corner of E Main St and E 2nd St.
Shuttle times: Friday 5pm + 7:30pm Saturday 8am, 4:30pm, + 6pm
Shuttles from the work site back to Marble will be provided on request.

Arrival + Camping

For volunteers without 4WD, please meet at one of the designated shuttle times. Volunteers bringing their personal, 4WD vehicles may arrive any time throughout the weekend beginning at 3pm on Friday. It is advised that you arrive before sunset (around 8:30pm). Please check in with an RFOV leader (Olivia or Carl) upon arrival. We will be camping above 9,500’ so please pack warm clothes for the mornings/evenings and appropriate sleeping gear.

Directions

To The Shuttle Site (Directions from Carbondale) – To shuttle pick up, search on Google Maps, “Marble Jailhouse” on East State St. Parking is to the north on East 2nd St. Drive time from Carbondale is approximately 45 minutes.

Follow CO-133 S to Carbondale. In 1 mile, continue straight through the traffic circle to stay on CO-133 S. In 21.5 miles, turn left onto Co Rd 3 towards Marble. In 5.6 miles, Co Rd 3 turns slightly right and becomes Park St. In 0.5 miles, Park St turns left and becomes W 2nd St/W State St. In 0.1 miles, turn left onto W 1st St. In 300 ft, turn right at the first cross street onto W Main St, heading toward Beaver Lake. In 0.2 miles, turn right onto E 2nd St. Parking will be near the open field on your right.

Driving Own Vehicle (Directions from Carbondale) – To the camp and work site on Lost Trail Rd, search on Google Maps, “Colorado Outward Bound School” and from there follow the RFOV signs. Drive time from Carbondale is approximately 1 hour.

Follow CO-133 S to Carbondale. In 1 mile, continue straight through the traffic circle to stay on CO-133 S. In 21.5 miles, turn left onto Co Rd 3 towards Marble. In 5.6 miles, Co Rd 3 turns slightly right and becomes Park St. In 0.5 miles, Park St turns left and becomes W 2nd St/W State St. In 0.1 miles, turn left onto W 1st St. In 300 ft, turn right at the first cross street onto W Main St, heading toward Beaver Lake. In 0.2 miles, turn left onto E 2nd St. Turn right at the first cross street onto E Silver St. Continue onto Co Rd 3, around Beaver Lake. In 1.5 miles, take the left fork onto Lost Trail Rd. Follow the RFOV signs to the campsite (about 0.5 miles).
