MUST KNOW:RFOV volunteers can park at the Hanging Lake lot from 8:00-9:15 AM and must present the emailed parking permit (only valid for 1 car). Please print or screenshot the permit for entrance. Volunteers do NOT need to purchase a permit at the Hanging Lake Visitor Center or ride the shuttle.
Carpooling is strongly encouraged. Volunteers must arrange transportation to and from the project. For convenience, carpool sign up is available, click here.

What to Expect

RFOV, our partners, and sponsors are excited to invite volunteers to join in the maintenance and restoration of the popular Hanging Lake Trail. Volunteers will be working on the entirety of the trail to lessen hiker impact, maintain drainage features, install stepping stones, and maintain benches and signs. A variety of work will be available for all skill levels. We will be celebrating with dinner and drinks to end the day.

    • To ensure the safety of your furry friends  and all volunteers, pets are not permitted on RFOV projects.
  • This project is appropriate for volunteers 12 years old and older. We request direct guardian supervision of any minors attending this project.


Please sign-in at the RFOV tent at the base of the Hanging Lake Trailhead.


RFOV will provide light breakfast snacks in the morning. Please bring your own lunch and two full water bottles. At the end of the day, we will celebrate with dinner and drinks.

What to Wear & Bring:

Please layer your clothing to be ready for a cool morning and warmer weather later in the day. Be prepared with a hat, sunscreen, and rain gear. Long pants are recommended and sturdy, closed-toed shoes are required.

    • Work/trail shoes
    • Work gloves
    • Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, etc.
    • Rain gear (jacket, pants)
    • Insect repellent 
    • Water (at least 1/2 gallon)
    • Personal snacks
    • Small backpack
    • Lunch


On Google Maps – search “CDOT Rest Area: Hanging Lake” located off of I-70 (~10 mins from Glenwood Springs)

From Glenwood Springs (or up valley)

Travel through downtown Glenwood Springs on CO-82 W. Follow the directional signs to merge onto I-70 E (towards Denver). Drive 8.7 miles to Exit 125 – Hanging Lake. Please check in at the RFOV tent upon arrival.

From New Castle (or west of Glenwood Springs)

Travel on I-70 E (towards Denver). Drive eastbound to Exit 125 – Hanging Lake. Please check in at the RFOV tent upon arrival.
